Gender
An affirming way to respond, might be:
“Anyone can be a fairy princess!”
Educators can utilize the pronouns, name, and identity that children have set for themselves in a matter of fact and supportive way. “Marco is the doctor in this game. She gets to decide what costume she wants to wear.”
“When you were born, the grownups guessed you were a girl, but you get to decide if that is right or not.”
Educators can use the term children are experimenting with, or using to identify themselves, saying “There are many different genders. Some people are cisboys or cisgirls, and some people are boy/girls.”
Educators can listen, affirm, and engage in conversations about gender. Affirming and asking, “You are right, anyone can have long or short hair. How do you feel when people think you are a girl?”
“Yes, you have a penis. Some boys have penises, and some don’t. You get to decide who you are.”
